Herbaceous Perennials
In general, three annual operations are necessary. In late spring
the taller growing plants will need supporting with pea sticks
(or similar). During the flowering period all will benefit from
the regular removal of spent blooms. Most will need to be cut
down to ground level during the late winter.
Exceptions to this latter dictum are those plants that do not
naturally undergo winter dormancy. For example, Acanthus is
cut down in late summer when it will rapidly produce new foliage
that will then survive over winter, Libertia which is evergreen,
simply needs its spent flower stalks removing in late summer.
